Some cultures view women and girls as having less intelligence and value to the community than men and boys. People in these cultures are taught that men are superior and therefore must control, overpower, and use females for their enjoyment and benefit. Sadly, females in some cultures feel that being abused is normal and that they deserve nothing more. This cruel view of females as objects to be used rather than individuals to be respected results in human tra cking, pros tu on, and rape becoming more common in many communities.

Music, movies, photos, literature, and other media help dictate society’s acceptance of these degrading attitudes toward women. Routine exposure to this cruelty is likely to twist the minds and attitudes of some boys and men. Internet access in our homes and on our cellphones has made it easy for people of all ages and backgrounds to watch and listen to violent sexual acts.

A sexually violent culture is empowered when victims rarely report the crimes. If these victims do go to officials for help, many times they are required to prove that they did not encourage the violent acts. In some countries, officials seldom arrest and punish the rapists, pimps, buyers of exploited women, or others involved.

Every year, more people work to make others aware of the devastating facts of human trafficking and rape. Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Canada, Northern Ireland, and France have passed laws that criminalize buyers and protect those prostituted. A study by The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work revealed that there are 300,000 victims of human trafficking in Texas, including almost 79,000 minors and youth victims of sex trafficking.

TWR Women of Hope’s audio drama for exploited women, Hidden Treasures, addresses their sensitive social, physical, psychological, medical, and emotional struggles from a Christian perspective.
